I can hardly maintain my family, but I am survivinganyway. I feel pity for those who cannot afford their least needs. I haveworked as a guard in a car-park in Tetuan every day since August 9, 1999 like aslave for a low wages. I meet tourists from different nationalities. I mustadmit that most of them are well educated people. But, sometimes there areexceptions. That is not a pretext for me to say that all western people arearrogant. I speak three foreign languages: Spanish, French and English. This ismy advantage. It helps me explain myself far better than the false guides atourist finds in the street. Some of the tourists I met asked about safety inthe country and I assured them that my country is safer than many westerncountries. So, they had nothing to worry about. They asked me about terrorismand I told them violence has nothing to do with Islam, which already bears themeaning of peace and the daily Islamic greeting is Salam. Unfortunately, I hada bad experience in the summer of 2007. There was a jam in the car-park. Ithappens all over the world during summer time. A European burst out like aninsane saying we are all animals. I cameup to him. I saw he was smoking. I asked him: “Have you ever seen an animal smoke? A bird, a cow... But, you smoke!Anyway, me the animal, I am going to pay for you.” A girl, who was behind himin the car, told me he was drunk. I said: “That’s why he is so sincere!”

Ineither smoke nor drink alcohol. When I am walking, I worry about the ants onmy way. Muslims, all over the world, are expected to act civically and notrespond to provocation whatever the case. Remember the words of the prophet whowas hurt by his own people and bleeding, but prayed: «Allah (God), forgive mypeople, they do not know!” To defend the prophet we only need to set goodexamples to the rest of the world, not by insulting those who insult him. Letus be live characters like the true believers we read about in Koran: “and when theignorant address them [harshly], they say [words of] peace,” Patience and wisdom! Islamis synonym of peace. Never forget this! And remember, the first message to theprophet was: “Read!” The more you read the better you can face the world.

Tabaco No

¿Qué placer le encuentran a ese llamado Tabaco? No es un alimento. Ni es leche ni es pan. Hasta los burros se niegan a comer la planta. Pero, el hombre, más necio que el burro, lo fuma, bien sabiendo que es un daño para el cuerpo y que muchas vidas humanas han sido su verdadero precio.

Lo que hace el tabaco no lo hacen las peores drogas, no por ser buenas sino por que el tabaco es peor. Es una costumbre popular. Llevar un cigarrillo a su boca no tiene nada de extraño. Pero, para una persona que ve el mundo con ojos objetivos una persona que fuma es una persona que se llena los pulmones con humo repleto de sustancias tóxicas. Lo que necesitan los pulmones es más bien aire limpio que contenga oxígeno necesario para la vida de las células. Y lo que hacen los fumadores es matar a las células con el veneno que se halla en cantidad alarmante en el tabaco. Comparemos alguien que fuma con alguien que come una manzana para entenderlo bien.

La industria del tabaco es una de las más rentables. Muchos políticos fuman. Así, no se toman medidas fuertes contra dicho mercado. El fin lucrativo prevalece sobre la conciencia humana. De un lado se cosechan beneficios y de otro vidas humanas.

El Castellano

El castellano, mundialmente conocido como El Español, es la segunda lengua de la mayoría de los que vivimos en el norte de Marruecos. Hasta entre los analfabetos, hay algunos que entienden y se hacen entender en español con cierta facilidad. En los años 70 eran las cadenas estatales, primera y segunda de la RTVE, las que se encargaban de informar a la mayoría de nosotros. La gente corriente en la zona se interesa no sólo mucho sino demasiado al fútbol español, dividiéndose en dos clanes uno con el Real Madrid y otro con el F.C Barcelona. Y si se habla con cualquiera de los jóvenes, siempre le contesta en hispano-árabe, una mezcla de castellano y árabe, al revés de lo que sucedía en tiempos del reino árabe en España, cuyo patrimonio todavía guarda huellas muy claras sobre el idioma de Cervantes.

Al margen de esta realidad, creo bien que hay jóvenes que hablan y escriben correctamente el español y para quienes la lengua del país vecino es parte de su personalidad. Esta juventud tiene mucho que aportar al castellano tanto en literatura, en cine como en cualquier otro sector. En mi caso, estudiaba lengua y literatura francesas y hablo y escribo correctamente el francés y también el inglés. Pero, el español que aprendí solo, sacando provecho de la vecindad de España y de sus medios de comunicación, me resulta más familiar. Es una relación sentimental que remonta a mi niñez. Mi madre me enseñó esas primeras palabras que cualquier madre española enseña a sus hijos. Luego fue la RTVE. Más tarde, fueron las canciones de Julio Iglesias, José Luis Pirales, Juan Manuel Serrat... Y hoy en día, Internet, un refugio para la mayoría de los que no nos convence la realidad frustrante y buscamos la verdad.

Lo que creo que falta en este sentido es una política de inversión de esa juventud inhibida que quiere salir a la luz y no encuentra manera. Y yo estoy seguro que el verdadero arte florece en la inhibición. La juventud marroquí, reprimida durante años y años, ya puede expresarse y decir lo que quiere. Puede hacerlo en cualquier lengua. Sin embargo, en el norte de Marruecos, el español es la lengua extranjera más querida de todas. Y los españoles no se entretienen en dirigirse en español a los habitantes de la zona sabiendo de antemano que se les va a contestar en español. Recuerdo un señor español que me dijo sonriendo: “Me siento inferior a ti”. Le pregunté: “¿Porqué?”. Me contestó: “¡Tú sabes mi lengua y yo no sé la tuya!”. Últimamente, encontré a muchos españoles que quieren aprender el árabe, jóvenes y viejos. Los marroquíes y los españoles tenemos el deber de estudiar cada uno la lengua del otro para una mejor comprensión. Y para un mejor acercamiento es imprescindible alentar a la juventud de este país que tiene ganas de dar lo mejor de sí en español. Una labor que le incumbe principalmente al ministerio español de cultura y deporte según creo, porque aquí nadie parece tener la menor idea ni intención de promover la literatura española entre los jóvenes de la zona. Se puede empezar organizando encuentros, concursos...

Hay mil maneras de hacerlo. Lo más importante es saber que el resultado va a ser, según mi juicio, un éxito notable. Toda la zona norte de Marruecos es un terreno fértil de jóvenes creadores capaces de presentar obras dignas de respeto y orgullo y de borrar la mala opinión que tienen algunos de nosotros. Tenemos mucho que dar para favorecer la imagen de nuestra zona y de nuestro pueblo en general ante las olas adversas de la mundialización.

A mis compatriotas, sobre todo, digo que en España no sólo hay fútbol. Hay literatura, cine, ciencia,...y un país vecino que debemos respetar según las tradiciones del Islam. A los españoles, les doy las gracias por su solidaridad y su tolerancia con los inmigrantes marroquíes, sobre todo.

One of the most stunning modern times inventions is Internet. But, is it really all that beneficial?

Most young people are confined to a virtual world, where they are isolated and almost mutilated. The addiction to the Internet is a bitter reality. Most Americans are fat due to the long hours they spent in front of computers and TV sets. The rest of the world imitate them blindly. The result is, for example : most children in Hong Kong are suffering from some sort of sight trouble.
I personally used to avoid sitting near TV. But, since twelve years now, I have been exposing my eyes continuously to the the computer's screen light. I am a writer. Besides, I use Internet to read news, learn languages and anything related to literature and cinema.
Internet has been ,y best school so far. I encourage people to use it moderately...

Being an Arab

Is it that shameful?

I speak four different languages I usually use indistinctly. I meet tourists from different nationalities. Most of them show me respect. To most of them I gave my second book as a souvenir.

No Smoking

Smoking is the single most preventable cause of mortality, responsible for one in every six deaths.

Every 13 seconds, someone dies from tobacco.

There are over 400,000 deaths caused by smoking each year in the United States.

Smoking causes more deaths every year than fires, automobile crashes, alcohol, cocaine, heroin, AIDS, murders and suicides COMBINED.

Smoking causes nearly 90% of all lung cancer and throat cancer.

Smoking causes 32% of fatal cancers, 21% of fatal heart disease and 88% of fatal chronic lung disease.

Lung cancer has surpassed breast cancer as the leading cancer killer among women.

Smoking is associated with cancers of the mouth, pharynx, larynx, oesophagus, pancreas, uterus, cervix, kidney and bladder.

Smoking is the principle cause of coronary heart disease – the most common cause of death in the United States.

Smoking causes atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries) and stroke.

People who smoke a pack of cigarettes a day have more than twice the risk of heart attack as compared to people who have never smoked. And people who smoke two or more packs have a risk of heart attack three times greater.

Passive smoke, commonly referred to as second-hand smoke (or environmental tobacco smoke), kills some 50,000 Americans each year, making it the third-leading cause of preventable death.

One non-smoker dies of second-hand smoke for every eight smokers.

In a country like Morocco, where unemployment causes depression and frustration, inciting even minors to smoke, unable to resist tobacco temptation, poverty is worsening. Addiction becomes slavery. While most of them cannot afford their minimal daily needs.
Tobacco is one of the main contributors to poverty in the third world, where the industry found at last a thriving market. While the international companies harvest revenues, local people lose their health and their money.
Most politicians smoke or share interests with this dirty business. That is why they wink at this catastrophe. This is a real epidemic, not to say a pandemic.
Let this anniversary be an opportunity for us all not just to meditate upon this social problem, but also urge smokers to quit tobacco and advise young people against even thinking of it.

Mi primera novela

Hace ya mucho tiempo que llevo escribiendo. Por fin, me he decidido a auto-publicar mis obras. Para mí, escribir en Castellano precisamente, ha sido un desfío porque se trata de una lengua que he aprendido solo. Es una obra que he escrito con amor y mucha preocupación por la juventud sobre todo.
